چکیده

Despite recent progression in cancer diagnosis and treatment, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a destructive disease with a dismal prognosis. As a hallmark of cancer, tumor-associated systemic inflammation and tumor inflammatory microenvironment play significant roles in cancer development and progression. HCC represents a typical instance of inflammation-related cancer since most HCC cases arise from chronic liver injury and inflammation. Based on this theory, a number of simple inflammation-based markers are established to reflect inflammation status and more importantly, to predict the prognosis of HCC patients. Among the reported markers, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level, Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), prognositc index (PI), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are intensively investigated and showed significant prognostic value in HCC patients receiving various treatments. Several other novel prognostic markers were also innovated to link inflammation and HCC prognosis. Based on routine laboratory tests, these inflammation-based prognostic markers may help improve the dilemma of HCC clinical management through enabling risk stratification, personalized surveillance and active intervention against this deadly disease. The purpose of this review is to summarize and discuss current knowledge on the prognostic value of simple inflammation based markers in HCC and to provide perspectives for future investigation.

Prognostic molecular markers in hepatocellular carcinoma (Review article

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 5th commonest malignancy worldwide and is the third most common cause of cancer-related death. The prevalence is different in the world. The ability to predict patients at higher risk of recurrence and with a poor prognosis would help to guide surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment according to individual risk. As understanding of hepatocarcinogenesi...

The prognostic value of inflammation-based scores in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma patients prior to treatment with sorafenib

Background and Aims The multikinase inhibitor sorafenib is the only currently approved drug for the indication of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It provides a limited gain in survival time but is frequently associated with adverse events. We currently lack simple prognostic factors in sorafenib-treated HCC patients. Various inflammation-based scores (IBSs) have been evaluated as predi...

Comparing PET metabolic parameters with clinicopathological factors in predicting onset of early recurrence in recently diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma

Introduction: Early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major risk factor affecting survival even after hepatectomy. Many clinical, biochemical parameters and pathological grading like fibrosis 1 index have been used for risk stratifying HCC. However not many studies have combined all of them. It is therefore important to risk stratify HCC especially with newer PE...

Prognostic value of systemic inflammation score in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatectomy

Inflammation plays an important role in cancer progression. In this study, we aimed to investigate the prognostic value of the systemic inflammatory biomarkers in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing curative resection. Data from 271 HCC patients who underwent curative resection in Zhongshan Hospital between 2008 and 2011 were included. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that g...

Prognostic Value of the Modified Glasgow Prognostic Score in Patients Undergoing Radical Surgery for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

There is increasing and consistent evidence concerning the association of systemic inflammation and poor outcome in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim of this study was to identify a superior inflammation-based prognostic scoring system for patients with HCC undergoing hepatectomy. We analyzed two independent cohorts of a total of 723 patients with HCC who underwent radical su...
